Solar thermal systems are used to generate hot water. These systems are generally used in conjunction with the domestic hot water system and will produce between 50-70% of the annual hot water demand. Systems comprise of a solar collector which is usually roof mounted although they can also be mounted on an “A” frame. The system requires a solar thermal hot water store which will be connected to a boiler or heat pump system.
The solar thermal collector is either a flat panel collector or an evacuated tube collector. The latter are usually the more efficient of the two options but are also normally the more expensive of the two options.

Example of evaculated solar thermal systems
As with Solar PV, solar thermal systems should be installed to face south with no shading issues. Clean Energy Consultancy provides independent advice on the suitability of your site for solar thermal taking into account your hot water demand and the orientation of your site. This normally involves a feasibility study and site survey to determine suitability and options followed by a detailed report which includes recommendations and specifications.
