The Solo Housing charity project was based upon renovating an old post office to create a hostel to provide affordable accommodation for single homeless people from all backgrounds with assistance from the charity’s staff to help them maintain their tenancy and develop their independent living skills.
Clean Energy Consultancy was commissioned to provide a feasibility study to assist the charity to apply for the CSEP and LCBP grants. The feasibility study estimated the electrical energy required and gas space heating consumption for the proposed hostel to be around 36,000 kWh per year producing 9.0 tonnes of CO2 at an annual cost of £2,021.00.
The feasibility study concluded that an 11kW heat pump with a borehole ground collector combined with a modest solar PV system would save the hostel 5.4 tonnes of CO2 per year.
Solo Housing was awarded the LCBP and the CSEP grants for the GSHP and Solar PV installation based on the Clean Energy Consultancy feasibility study.
