Energy saving advice

The biggest long-term savings come from changing your energy habits and being more energy efficient. As you start to see savings its a good idea to re-invest this money in energy saving products and appliances to reduce your energy consumption even further. The long-term savings will more than pay for the cost of purchasing and installing these measures.

  • Only boil as much hot water as you need.
  • Remember to regularly de-scale your kettle if you live in a hard water area.
  • Do not position your fridge next to your cooker or boiler.
  • Do not put warm food into your fridge.
  • Regularly defrost your freezer and try and keep it in a cool room.
  • Ensure your thermostat on your hot water cylinder is not set to more than 60 degrees centigrade.
  • Try and keep your central heating thermostat to no more than 18 degrees centigrade.
  • Keep your radiators clear of curtains and try not to position furniture in front of them.
  • If possible have thermostatic valves fitted to your radiators.
  • Program your heating to go off 30 minutes before you leave and 30 minutes before you come home.
  • Draw your curtains at dusk to help keep the heat in.
  • Turn off radiators in rooms which are not used.
  • Ensure your loft space is insulated to the maximum level.
  • Use a draught excluder at the bottom of doors not in regular use.
  • Use low energy bulbs in all your light fittings including your outside lights.
  • Remember to turn off all appliances when not in use, leaving items on standby continues to use energy.
  • When you need to replace your appliances, purchase “A” rated efficiency.

  • Ensure all your employees are fully aware that they are responsible for using the energy as they operate the equipment they use.
  • Invest in good quality LED lighting or where this is not feasible, fit low energy lighting.
  • Do not have the workplace lit artificially if there is sufficient sunshine entering the room.
  • Be flexible with the heating, if it is unseasonably warm turn the heating either down or off.
  • Don’t have windows open with the heating on.
  • Try and use natural ventilation rather then desk fans.
  • Ensure staff switch off equipment they use when they go for lunch.
  • Encourage staff to use the stairs rather than the lift, the extra time it takes will be easily offset by the energy savings and your employees will be fitter as well.
